⚠️ Google's March OS update broke Pixel detection for all 3rd party apps. Meet your new Universal Tracker, your music history lives on! ⚠️
Jump to a question:
You don't! The native "Now Playing" feature is built directly into your Pixel by Google and is completely free. However, Now Playing History is an independent, third-party app created by a solo developer. It upgrades your free Pixel feature by adding premium tools like interactive maps, beautiful charts, universal tracking (Spotify/Apple Music), and long-term data backups. The small fee supports the ongoing development of these custom features.
Unfortunately, no. Google's privacy restrictions prevent third-party applications from accessing the song history your phone collected before you installed our app. However, from the exact moment you install Now Playing History, it will permanently save every new song it detects so you never lose your history again.
Now Playing History relies on your Pixel's built-in system to listen for songs. Because your Pixel does this entirely offline to protect your privacy, its database is limited to about 100,000 popular tracks, meaning highly obscure songs might be missed.
Troubleshooting Tip: If your phone stops detecting songs entirely, try turning Off "Enhance Now Playing" in your device settings (Settings > Sound and vibration > Now Playing).
No. Now Playing History is heavily optimized and typically uses less than 1% of your battery per charge. Your Pixel's Always-On Display and native song detection use roughly another 2-3%. Combined, the entire background tracking experience uses less than 4% of a full battery charge.
Currently, the Now Playing History is available in 19 countries and supports 7 languages. Because the app requires specific Google Pixel hardware to function, distribution is limited strictly to regions where Google officially sells Pixel devices and where our supported languages are primarily spoken. We hope to add more regions in the future!
Unlike Google's native Now Playing history, which permanently deletes your data when you upgrade devices, Now Playing History allows you to securely back up and restore your database. You can keep years of music history safe, even when switching to a new Pixel.
Absolutely not. The app does not have microphone permissions and never records audio. It simply reads the text (Artist and Song Title) that your Pixel's offline system generates and saves it to a secure, local database on your device.
We would love to support every major platform, in fact, the code for them is already written and tested! Unfortunately, several corporations have recently enacted strict policies or high paywalls that block independent utility apps from connecting to their platforms:
Spotify: Spotify recently changed their developer policies, completely banning independent developers from putting apps into production. To allow users to export playlists, they now legally require developers to be a registered corporate entity, already have a minimum of 250,000 Monthly Active Users, and pay a monthly subscription fee.
Apple Music: Apple requires independent developers to pay a high annual subscription fee simply to access their API. As a small, independent developer offering a low one-time purchase app, operating at a recurring annual loss just to maintain this single integration for a few users is not sustainable.
Deezer: Deezer has completely frozen their third-party developer program and is not currently accepting new applications for API access.
We fully support seamless, verified exports to open ecosystems like YouTube Music and Tidal. If the other platforms ever reopen their doors to indie developers without massive corporate gatekeeping, we will gladly enable those integrations immediately!
