Step 1: Unlocking Developer Options
Before installing the apps, you need to unlock a hidden settings menu on your phone.
Open your phone's Settings app.
Scroll down and tap About phone.
Scroll to the very bottom to find the Build number.
Tap the words Build number 7 times quickly.
Enter your PIN or pattern if prompted. You will see a small message saying, "You are now a developer!"
Go back to the main Settings menu and tap System. You will now see Developer options available.
Step 2: Download and Install the Core Apps
Because these are community-built tools, you will download them directly from the developers rather than the Google Play Store.
The Downloads
How to Install
Open your phone's web browser and download the latest "APK" files for both apps from the official GitHub pages using the links above.
Open your phone's file explorer and tap on the downloaded Shizuku APK (e.g., shizuku-v13.6.0.r1086.2650830c-release.apk).
A security prompt will warn you about installing unknown apps. Tap Settings on that prompt.
Toggle on Allow from this source.
Tap the back arrow, then tap Install.
Repeat this exact process to install the Ambient Music Mod APK (e.g., AmbientMusicMod-v2.4.apk).
Security Note: Once you finish installing the APKs, you can reverse this permission. Go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps and turn it off for your file manager.
Step 3: Configure Shizuku (The Bridge)
Shizuku acts as a secure bridge that allows Ambient Music Mod to identify music in the background without requiring a rooted device.
Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network.
Open Settings > System > Developer options.
Scroll down to the "Debugging" section and turn on the Wireless debugging toggle.
Open your newly installed Shizuku app.
Under the "Start via Wireless debugging" section, tap Pairing.
Tap Developer options to jump back to the settings menu.
Tap the actual words Wireless debugging (not the toggle switch) to open its specific menu.
Tap Pair device with pairing code. A 6-digit code will appear on your screen.
Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your notifications. Find the "Shizuku pairing" notification, type in the 6-digit code, and tap Send.
Go back to the Shizuku app and tap Start.
Important Note on Phone Restarts: Shizuku is a temporary service. If you turn your phone off and back on, you will need to open the Shizuku app and tap Start again. You will not need to repeat the pairing code process.
Step 4: Configure Ambient Music Mod (The Engine)
Ambient Music Mod is the engine that actually "listens" and identifies the songs playing around you.
Open the Ambient Music Mod app.
It will ask for permission to access Shizuku. Tap Allow all the time.
Follow the simple on-screen setup wizard.
Download the offline music database when prompted (this allows your phone to recognize songs even without internet).
Turn on the Now Playing toggle within the app's settings.
Ensure your notifications are turned On so you can see when a song is recognized.
Step 5: Install Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble (The Brain)
To see your history and get a beautiful interface, we will grab one final app from the official Google Play Store.
Download Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble from the Google Play Store.
Open the app and grant the requested permissions (specifically Notification Access so it can read the songs Ambient Music Mod finds).
Check the app's settings to ensure it is set to listen for Ambient Music Mod broadcasts (this should be On by default).
Step 6: Stop Your Phone from Closing the Apps (Crucial)
If you skip this step, your phone's battery saver will quietly close these apps, and the music recognition will stop working.
Open Settings > Apps > See all apps.
Find and tap on Shizuku.
Tap App battery usage (or just Battery depending on your phone).
Change the setting from "Optimized" to Unrestricted.
Repeat steps 2-4 for Ambient Music Mod.
Repeat steps 2-4 for Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble.
You are officially set up! Walk into a room with music playing, give your phone a minute to process the audio, and your track notification will appear.
Why "Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble" Shines
While this takes a few minutes to set up, linking these tools together gives you powerful features that Google’s standalone app never offered:
Streaming Integrations: Combines your Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Tidal streams with your background music discoveries into one unified history.
Universal Scrobbling: Automatically logs your newly discovered tracks to your Last.fm profile.
Deep Statistics: Creates personalized charts of your Top Songs, Artists, Genres, and top listening times, filterable by timeframes (Week, Month, Year, All-Time).
Music Map: Saves the physical location of where a song was identified, helping you remember exactly what played at a specific cafe or party.
Backup & Restore: Allows you to easily save your listening history and move it to a new device later.
Privacy First: Keeps all of your data securely stored directly on your phone. No logins or accounts are required.
