⚠️ Google's March OS update broke Pixel detection for all 3rd party apps. Meet your new Universal Tracker, your music history lives on! ⚠️
If you recently installed the March Feature Drop on your Google Pixel, you likely noticed that your ambient music discoveries stopped logging in Now Playing History, or other 3rd-party appls. I want to be fully transparent with the community about what happened: Google has fundamentally changed how the OS handles music recognition and has completely restricted third-party access to this data.
What exactly changed?
With this latest update, Google transitioned "Now Playing" into an independent, standalone app. In doing so, they moved the recognition data behind internal IPC. The system notifications that independent developers have relied upon for years to trigger actions have been permanently removed.
This isn't just a bug affecting this app. This system-level lockdown means no third-party application, whether it's Now Playing History, the official Last.fm app, or automation tools like Macrodroid, can access native Pixel "Now Playing" data anymore. After 8 years of development, Google has unfortunately closed that door to me and every other application that utilized this data to enhance the user experience.
The App Lives On: Evolving to a Universal Tracker
While it is incredibly frustrating to see a platform restrict developer access, I refuse to let this app, or years of music history, die.
Your music history will continue seamlessly. Back in December, I began pivoting the application into a universal tracker and scrobbler.
With this change, the app now actively captures your music discoveries and listens directly from Shazam, YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, & Deezer, with more support on the way.
You will continue to have access to the beautiful Material 3 Expressive interface, your personal charts, the music map, and data exports—advanced features that Google will never add to their standalone app.
To everyone who has supported my independent development over the years: thank you.
Google may have changed the rules, but your music history lives on!
