🎵 Missing Ambient Tracks? Pixel Now Playing is Back! 🎵
When the March 2026 Pixel Feature Drop transitioned Google's beloved Now Playing ambient music recognition into a standalone application, it fundamentally broke a core feature for power users: the system notifications. This change prevented third-party apps from reading and logging your automatically detected ambient music.
The good news is that Google is finally reversing this limitation. Pixel "Now Playing" notifications are officially returning, and Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble is already fully updated to catch them, log them, and scrobble them to your Last.fm profile.
Once this feature is activated on your device, Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble will seamlessly resume tracking your detected ambient history in the background. As always, this ambient music tracking operates entirely offline, processes your metadata securely on your device, contains no ads, and requires absolutely no accounts or purchases to function.
It is crucial to understand that Google is enabling these notifications via a slow, phased server-side rollout.
The activation of this feature is tied to your specific Google account and device, and it is completely outside the control of Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble. Even if your device is fully updated, you may not see the notifications immediately. However, when Google flips the switch for your account, the app is pre-wired to begin building your ambient listening stats the very second that first notification arrives.
To ensure your phone is ready to broadcast and capture your ambient music discoveries, you must verify three specific settings:
When Now Playing notifications are provisioned for your account and device, a new Notifications toggle appears directly within the app's settings.
Open your Pixel's Now Playing app.
Tap Settings (the gear icon in the top right corner).
Ensure the toggle for Notifications is turned On.
Note: If you do not see the Notifications option, the feature has not been enabled for your account yet. This is not a bug, you are simply waiting for Google's phased server-side rollout to reach your device.
Because background audio recognition is handled by core system architecture, Android System Intelligence must be permitted to post notifications.
Open your Pixel's Settings app.
Navigate to Apps > See all apps.
Scroll down and select Android System Intelligence.
Tap on Notifications and ensure the master toggle for All Android System Intelligence notifications is turned On.
For Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble to read the broadcasted track metadata, log your plays, and generate your stats and collages, it requires notification reading permissions.
Open your Pixel's Settings app.
Navigate to Apps > Special app access.
Tap on Notification read, reply and control (or Notification access on older Android versions).
Locate Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble in the list.
Ensure the master toggle for Allow notification access is turned On.
Because this is a phased Google rollout, being on the latest firmware and app versions is the only way to ensure you are eligible to receive the server-side update. If the ambient tracking isn't working for you yet, please be patient and verify the following:
Check for System Updates: Go to Settings > System > Software updates and ensure your Pixel is running the latest Android system update and Google Play system update.
Update the Now Playing App: Ensure the official Pixel Now Playing application is updated to the latest release in the Play Store.
Update the Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble App: Ensure you are running the latest version of Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble, and have enabled Pixel Now Playing in the Detection Sources settings, so our newest tracking architecture is active on your device.
Go to Settings > System > Software updates, and ensure you have the latest Android system update, Google Play system update, and app updates.
Go to Settings > Apps > See all (n) apps > Android System Intelligence > Notifications > Other (you may need to click Show unused categories first) > Recognized Music Notifications. Ensure Notifications are toggled On.
Go to Settings > Apps > See all (n) apps > Now Playing > Notifications. Make sure All Now Playing notifications is toggled On.
Go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Notification read, reply and control > Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble. Ensure Allow notification access is toggled On, and at a minimum Notifications, and Silent are checked.
Open Now Playing > Tap the Settings gear and ensure Notifications are toggled On
Open Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble > Tap the three dots menu > Tap Settings, then Detection sources. Ensure Pixel Now Playing is toggled On.
Stop all active media players on your Pixel phone (YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, etc), and make sure the microphone isn't active (Shazam, Auto Shazam, Recorder, etc). Essentially, your Pixel should not be making any noise, and not recording anything.
Play a song on another device (another phone, tablet, computer, stereo, etc) with your Pixel nearby to be able to hear the music clearly. Pull down your notification shade by dragging from the top of the screen. Expand Silent notifications if necessary. Wait for the Now Playing notification to display.
Open Now Playing and verify the song was detected by Pixel Now Playing.
Open Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble and verify the song was logged.
If any step fails, try
Clear cache (not data) for Android System Intelligence, Now Playing, and Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble
Reboot your Pixel phone
Toggle Off and back On Notification access in step 4
Toggle Off and back On Notifications in step 5
Toggle Off and back On Pixel Now Playing in step 6
Uninstall and reinstall Now Playing: Stats & Scrobble (make a backup first!)
